The single became the biggest hit ever for Wells, Motown’s first female star, and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart. The song led the Cashbox magazine R&B chart for seven weeks [1]. “My Guy” also happened to be Wells’ last hit single for Motown, excepting duets she recorded with label mate Marvin Gaye. An option in her recording contract allowed Wells to terminate the contract at her discretion after she reached her twenty-first birthday on May 13, 1964. Encouraged by her ex-husband, Wells broke her Motown contract and signed with 20th Century Fox in hopes of higher royalties and possible movie roles. The Wings would win the series 4–3 to win their second consecutive Stanley Cup and fourth in six seasons. It would be 42 years before Detroit would win another cup.

The 1955 NBA World Championship Series was the championship round of the 1954-55 NBA season. The best-of-seven series was won by the Syracuse Nationals, who defeated the Fort Wayne Pistons in the final game when Syracuse’s George King made a free throw with 12 seconds left to put the Nationals up 92-91. King then stole the ball from Fort Wayne’s Andy Phillip with three seconds remaining to clinch the victory for Syracuse.Because of the arena not believing Fort Wayne would make the NBA Finals, the arena was booked and not available, and the Fort Wayne home games were played in Indianapolis.Today the franchise is in Philadelphia as the 76ers.

The 1955 FA Cup Final was contested by Newcastle United and Manchester City at Wembley. Newcastle won 3–1, with goals from Jackie Milburn in the first minute (after 45 seconds, a record in a final at Wembley, a record he held until 1997), Bobby Mitchell and George Hannah. Bobby Johnstone scored City’s goal. The game was virtually decided when Man City fullback Meadows was turned inside out by the elusive and mercurial Bobby Mitchell and after 22 minutes was stretchered off with a bad leg injury. No replacements in those days. Toon were already on top and this just added to City’s woes, as their much-vaunted Revie Plan (based on a deep-lying centre-forward in Don Revie, later to be England manager) failed to fire. Man City had flashy tracksuits (virtually unheard-of at the time), so the game was “the Gaudies v the Geordies”.

Sincerely” is a popular song written by Harvey Fuqua and Alan Freed and published in 1954.

It was originally recorded by The Moonglows, who scored a #1 one single on the Billboard Juke Box and #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The best-selling version was a cover recorded by The McGuire Sisters, entering the charts in 1954 and reaching number one the next year. Many R&B collectors decry the cover version by the McGuire Sisters which kept the Moonglows off the Pop charts, but the Moonglows’ version stole lyrics from a 1951 Dominoes tune, “That’s What You’re Doing To Me”. The bridge in both songs is almost identical: “Lord, won’t you tell me/ Why I love that woman so?/ She doesn’t want me/ But I’ll never let her go”. In 1988 the country quartet Forester Sisters reached #8 on the Billboard Hot Country chart with their remake of the song.

Johnny Come Home” was the debut single release by British band Fine Young Cannibals, taken from their debut album Fine Young Cannibals.

It is similar to the style of many other of the band’s hits, a mixture of rock and ska with Roland Gift’s distinctive vocals, as well as a Jazz-type trumpet solo. It was released in 1985 and was one of the group’s most popular hits. The song tells the gritty realistic story of a runaway youth, and alternates from the first-person narrative, explaining how his arrival in the big city has not turned out as he expected, to the view of the parents in the chorus, expressing their wish that he would come home.

Although it failed to reach the top 40 in the United States, stalling at No. 76, it was a good start for the group in their native United Kingdom, peaking at No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart in July 1985. Along with the track “Blue”, “Johnny Come Home” did reach No. 9 on the dance chart in the USA>

Sidekick Scotty’s Sports Headlines of April 1986!

The Playoffs were underway and the 1986 Stanley Cup Final NHL championship series was contested by the Calgary Flames in their first Final appearance and the Montreal Canadiens in their 32nd. The Canadiens would win the best-of-seven series four games to one, to win their twenty-third Stanley Cup, and their seventeenth in their last eighteen Finals appearances dating back to 1956. It was the first all-Canadian finals since 1967, the last year of the original six era.

The season was winding down and the 1986 NBA Finals was the championship round of the 1985-86 NBA season. It pitted the Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics against the Western Conference champion Houston Rockets. The Celtics defeated the Rockets four games to two to win their 16th NBA championship. The championship would be the Celtics’ last until the 2008 NBA Finals. Larry Bird was named the Finals MVP.

The 1986 FA Cup Final  to be played in a few weeks was a Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton at Wembley. The match was played seven days after Liverpool had secured the league title, with Everton finishing as runners-up. Liverpool went on to win this match 3–1, with two goals from Ian Rush, and one from Craig Johnston after Gary Lineker had put Everton ahead in the first half.

Soon to happen ..The 1986 European Cup Final  ((Champions League) was a football match held at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, Seville, on 7 May 1986, that saw Steaua Bucureşti of Romania defeat Barcelona of Spain in an extraordinary penalty shoot out, after 120 minutes of play could not separate the two sides. Barcelona had all of their spot-kicks saved by Steaua goalkeeper Helmuth Duckadam, who was later dubbed “The Hero of Seville.”[1] It remains Steaua Bucureşti’s only European Cup triumph, and the only one by any Romanian team.

The 1986 Masters Tournament was the 50th Masters Tournament, and was the first golfing major of 1986. Jack Nicklaus won his record 18th professional major with a historic victory in which he shot 65 (including a back nine 30) during the final round for a final tally of 279 (-9). At age 46, his win made him the oldest winner of the Masters and the second oldest winner of any major championship behind Julius Boros, who was 48 when he captured the 1968 PGA Championship. The win also gave him a record six Masters victories. His first was in 1963 and his first major win was the 1962 U.S. Open. The 23 years between Masters victories and 24 years between major victories are also records. The runners-up were Tom Kite and Greg Norman, whose near-misses at the Masters are also noteworthy. Nicklaus won $144,000 for his first place finish.

Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Julian Sands, Simon Callow, Judi Dench, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Rupert Graves round out the principal cast. The Critters film series, from New Line Cinema, comprises four movies that combine elements of horror, science fiction and comedy. The first film, called simply Critters, was released in 1986 and received “two thumbs up” from Siskel and Ebert.

Althoughly widely believed to have been made to cash in on the success of the similarly themed Gremlins, director Stephen Herek has refuted this in interviews, pointing out that the first Critters script was written by Domonic Muir long before Gremlins went into production and subsequently underwent rewrites to reduce the apparent similarities between the two films. In any case, the basic plotline of the first film – mysterious strangers arrives in small town to repel marauding invaders – is more like a classic Western narrative.

Despite being considerably softer in its approach than its BBC predecessor, the show broke ground in its depiction of issues previously considered unsuitable for U.S. network television comedy, such as racism, homosexuality, women’s liberation, rape, miscarriage, abortion, breast cancer, the Vietnam War, menopause, and impotence.

The show ranked #1 in the yearly Nielsen ratings from 1971 to 1976. It became the first television series to reach the milestone of having topped the Nielsen ratings for five consecutive years, a mark later matched by The Cosby Show and surpassed by American Idol, which notched its sixth consecutive year at #1 in 2010 and whose streak is still ongoing. The episode “Sammy’s Visit” was ranked #13 on TV Guide’s 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time.TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time ranked All in the Family as #4. Bravo also named the show’s protagonist, Archie Bunker, TV’s greatest character of all time.

The Twelfth of Never” is a popular song recorded by Johnny Mathis and later by artists including Cliff Richard and Donny Osmond. In the case of the song, the 12th of Never is given as the date on which the singer will stop loving his beloved, thus indicating that he will always love her/him. The song draws a similar link between the cessation of love and a number of other events expected never to happen.

The song was written by Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis Webster, the tune (except for the bridge) being adapted from “The Riddle Song” (also known as “I Gave My Love a Cherry”), an old English folk song. Mathis’s original version reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA in 1957. A version by Cliff Richard was released in 1964 and reached #8 in the UK. Space Oddity” is a song written and performed by David Bowie and released as a music single in 1969. It is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut; its title alludes to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, released the previous year. Incidentally, the protagonist of the film is called David Bowman. The lyrics have also been seen to lampoon the failed British space programme.[1] The song appears on the album David Bowie (also known as Space Oddity). The BBC featured the song in its television coverage of the Apollo 11 launch and lunar landing, which took place in the days following the release of the song.

Walk on the Wild Side” is a Lou Reed song from his 1972 second solo album Transformer. It was produced by David Bowie. In the United States, RCA released an edited version of the song as a single which eliminated the song’s reference to oral sex.

The lyrics tell of a series of individuals and their journeys to New York City, and refers to several of the regular “superstars” at Andy Warhol’s New York studio, The Factory, namely Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Joe Dallesandro, Jackie Curtis and Joe Campbell (referred to in the song by his nickname Sugar Plum Fairy). This song is also a famous “goodbye” or ending song for concerts. Its use is often as filler for a last song, usually in preparation for an encore, since it has a catchy beat and a guitar solo can be easily added to the end of the song in order to spice things up before the encore. As such, many live covers have been performed by a multitude of bands and it has become a hit among soft rock fans. Appropriately, it was the final pop hit for Decca Records in the United States.

Wainwright himself has never confirmed or denied this claim, but has said the song was an accident written in fifteen minutes.

Tesla scored a huge hit with a cover of the song on their album “Five Man Acoustical Jam” in the ‘90’s and more recently Fat Boy Slim had a hit called “Don’t Let The Man Get You Down” based mostly off the now unforgettable line….“And the sign said long haired freaky people need not apply”.

The 1968 Masters Tournament was contested from April 11 to April 14 at Augusta National Golf Club. It was the 32nd Masters Tournament. 74 players entered the tournament and 52 of them made the cut at five-over-par (149).

Bob Goalby birdied the 13th and 14th and eagled the 15th to record a final round of 66. At first it appeared that he and Roberto DeVicenzo would play in a playoff, but DeVicenzo returned an incorrect scorecard showing a 4 on the 17th instead of a birdie 3. Tommy Aaron incorrectly marked the 4 and DeVicenzo failed to catch the mistake and signed the scorecard. PGA of America rules stated that the higher written score signed by a golfer on his card must stand. As such, the error gave Goalby the championship

Valleri” is a song written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart for The Monkees, who had a #3 on Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on Cash Box with it in early 1968. The song also rose to #12 in the UK.

Responding to Screen Gems president and music supervisor Don Kirshner’s early-morning request for a “girl’s-name song” to be used in the Monkees’s television series, Boyce and Hart improvised “Valleri” on their way to Kirshner’s office, after pretending over the telephone that the song was already finished. Nonetheless, Kirshner was pleased with their work, and “Valleri” took its place on the Monkees recording schedule, with Boyce and Hart producing the original sessions in August 1966.

Ernest “Ernie” Maresca (born August 21, 1939, The Bronx, New York) is an American singer-songwriter and record company executive, best known for writing or co-writing some of Dion’s biggest hits.

He began singing and writing in a doo-wop group, The Regents, who later had a hit with “Barbara Ann”. His song “No-One Knows” came to the attention of Dion DiMucci, who recorded it successfully with The Belmonts on Laurie Records, the record reaching #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 record chart in 1958. Maresca then began songwriting full time, writing “Runaround Sue” with Dion, and then “The Wanderer” – his biggest success, although his run of hits with Dion continued with “Lovers Who Wander” and “Donna the Prima Donna”.

In 1961, he was offered a recording contract with Seville, a small New York label. His protestations that he was not much of a singer were brushed aside, and he wrote a hit for himself, “Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)”, which reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1962. He continued to record, with less success, for the remainder of the 1960s, but also continued as a writer with hits including “Whenever a Teenager Cries” for Reparata and the Delrons, and “Party Girl” for Bernadette Carroll. He also wrote, along with Jimmy Curtiss, the Jimmie F. Rodgers’ 1967 comeback (and last) hit, “Child of Clay”. By the 1970s he was head of Laurie Records’ publicity department, and continued as a record company executive.

Sidekick Scotty’s Sports Headlines of April 1962

The 1962 Stanley Cup Final would be  contested by the defending champion Chicago Black Hawks and the Toronto Maple Leafs who had last appeared in the Final in 1960. The Maple Leafs would win the best-of-seven series four games to two to win the Stanley Cup, their first since 1951.

The 1962 NBA Finals was the championship series of the 1961-62 season, and was the conclusion of the 1962 NBA Playoffs. The best-of-seven series was played between the Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers and the Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics. This was the Celtics’ 6th straight trip to the Finals, and they won the best-of-seven series in Game 7, 110-107 in overtime. It was the second (and last) time in NBA history that Game 7 of an NBA Finals had gone into overtime (the only other one being in 1957).

The 1962 FA Cup Final would take  place on 5 May 1962 at Wembley Stadium and was won by Tottenham Hotspur over Burnley, by a 3–1 scoreline. Due to the lack of passion and excitement, replaced by patience and cautious play, the final was dubbed “The Chessboard Final”. Tottenham took to the field as holders, having won the League and FA Cup Double in 1961. They had finished the 1962 league campaign in third position. Burnley finished runners-up in the league that season, behind Ipswich Town.

Queen of the Night” is a song co-written and performed by American pop/R&B singer Whitney Houston. It was the fifth and final single released from her multi-platinum soundtrack The Bodyguard. The song received a nomination at the Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Original Song.

“Queen of the Night” is an uptempo pop rock/dance number, with Houston expressing how she “rules the club scene”, proclaiming herself “queen of the night”. It was not released as a single in America, but it received such substantial radio play that it rose to number 36 on the Hot 100 Airplay. However, because of Billboard magazine rules at the time (which have since been modified), a song with no commercial single available could not chart on the main Billboard Hot 100. The song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, becoming Houston’s fifth number 1 dance single. It was released in several other countries, peaking at number 14 in the UK.

The 1994 Stanley Cup Final was a best-of-seven playoff series contested between the Eastern Conference champion New York Rangers and Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League. The Canucks were making the club’s second Final appearance, their first coming during their Cinderella run of 1982, and the Rangers were making their tenth appearance, their first since 1979. The Rangers ended their record 54-year championship drought with a victory in Game Seven to claim the long-awaited Stanley Cup in just a few weeks. It was the fourth championship in franchise history. The CBC broadcast of the deciding Game Seven attracted an average Canadian audience of 4.957 million viewers, making it the most watched CBC Sports program in history to that time.

The 1994 NBA Finals was the championship round of the 1993–94 National Basketball Association season, featuring the Western Conference’s Houston Rockets defeating the Eastern Conference’s New York Knicks.

This matchup was Hakeem Olajuwon’s second NBA Finals series appearance, his other being in 1986, where Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics defeated the Houston Rockets four games to two. The series was Patrick Ewing’s first NBA Finals appearance. The Rockets came in with strong determination to win not only the franchise’s first NBA championship, but the city’s first championship in a league that still existed, all while the Knicks were looking to add a third NBA championship trophy, as the Knicks’ last trophy came from the 1973 NBA Finals. The Knicks also hoped to impress their new owners Viacom, who had just bought Paramount Communications (formerly Gulf+Western), their longtime owners (after the series however, Viacom sold the Knicks and the rest of the Madison Square Garden properties).

The 1994 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men’s NCAA Division I college basketball. Arkansas, coached by Nolan Richardson, won the national title with a 76–72 victory in the final game over Duke, coached by Mike Krzyzewski. Corliss Williamson of Arkansas was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Bill Clinton, President of the United States and former governor of Arkansas, was in attendance for the Final Four, as well as the regionals that were held in Dallas the previous week. (Clinton was already scheduled to be in Dallas for the wedding of his brother Roger and added the basketball games to his plans.)

The 1994 FA Cup Final was the 49th FA Cup final to be held since the Second World War and was contested between Manchester United and Chelsea. United went into the final as Premier League champions, having won the title by eight points over Blackburn Rovers. They were bidding to become only the fourth team of the 20th century to complete “the Double” and the first in their own history. Chelsea, on the other hand, were playing in their first FA Cup Final since 1970 and first major final since the 1972 Football League Cup Final; they also finished 14th in the Premier League.

Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)” is the seventh track and third single from Billy Joel’s 1993 album River of Dreams. It was inspired by Alexa Ray Joel, his daughter by Christie Brinkley. The song is in the key of G major.

Joel had written English words in the chant describing a man who had lost his faith, and had then had the words translated into Latin. He changed his mind upon hearing the recording, and incorporated it into the song River of Dreams. He later removed the interlude from the final studio version of “River of Dreams”, and instead wrote lyrics to the melody that reflected his sentiment toward Alexa Ray, who was a young child at the time of writing. It is the only single the group released in their career to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.It was released in 1984 as the second track on the album 1984. This refers to the fact that the producer spliced parts of two different takes to create the one heard in the song

Sidekick Scotty’s Sports Headlines of March 1984

The 1984 Stanley Cup Final was to be held  in a few weeks between the Edmonton Oilers and the then-defending champion New York Islanders. The Islanders had swept the Oilers in four straight games to win the ’83 Cup. In 1984, the Islanders were seeking their 5th straight Stanley Cup but the upstart Oilers would win the best-of-seven series four games to one to win their first Stanley Cup, becoming the third post-1967 expansion team and first former WHA team to win the Cup, and also the first team based west of Chicago to win the Stanley Cup since the WCHL’s Victoria Cougars became the last non-NHL team to win the trophy in 1925. It was also the fifth straight Final of post-1967 expansion teams and a rematch of the 1983 final – the most recent time that the two teams from the previous Stanley Cup final series would face off in the next final series, prior to the 2009 Finals. With their 4 straight Cup wins from 1980 to 1983 and their appearance in the 1984 Cup Final, the Islanders set an NHL record of 19 consecutive playoff series wins that currently stands unbroken.

The 1984 FA Cup Final was contested by Everton and Watford at Wembley. Everton won 2–0, with one goal by Graeme Sharp and a particularly memorable goal from Andy Gray.
